ABOARD THE QUANTUM OF THE SEAS — Rock climbing walls, ice skating rinks, zip lines and now .. skydiving simulators.

Passengers aboard the maiden voyage of Royal Caribbean's new Quantum of the Seas today began trying out the latest gee-whiz attraction to open on a cruise ship: A glass-enclosed wind tunnel that mimics the feel of skydiving.

Dubbed RipCord by iFLY, the 23-foot-high chamber features upward-flowing wind of more than 100 miles an hour, elevating riders off the ground and giving them the sensation of floating through the air.

'It's awesome,' says Craig Harvey, 51, of Bradenton, Fla., just moments after stepping out of the attraction. 'I'd go back in a heartbeat.'

Passengers enter the RipCord one at a time with an instructor after changing into skydiving outfits and watching an instructional video. The experience is similar to what is found at iFLY skydiving simulators on land.

'He just pulls you in, and out you go,' says Harvey, a Royal Caribbean regular who is on his 47th cruise. 'I have a fear of jumping out of a plane, but I had none of that sense of falling.'

Another passenger beaming about the experience is Jason Bounds, 38, of Atlanta, who has been skydiving out of a plane twice before. 'It feels like (skydiving). You have the wind in your face and all around you.'

A veteran of 11 Royal Caribbean cruises, Bounds says RipCord is one of the coolest things he's seen on one of the line's vessels. 'They should put it on all the ships.'

Located at the back of Quantum between its two rear funnels, the RipCord experience is free to passengers. More involved lessons also are available at an extra charge.

RipCord is just one of several new-for-a-ship features on Quantum, which at 168,666 tons is the third largest cruise ever built (behind Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas). The vessel also boasts such innovations as a bar with robot bartenders and a glass capsule on a mechanical arm that takes passengers into the sky for bird's-eye views.
